About Jerome Dsouza
Jerome D’Souza was a pioneering figure in Konkani music, born on March 4, 1933, in Cascia Parish, Mangalore. Growing up in a time when Konkani songs often borrowed heavily from Hindi or Western tunes, Jerome brought a fresh, original voice to the scene.
He composed his own lyrics and melodies, giving Konkani music a unique identity that resonated deeply with listeners. After completing high school, he began composing for Konkani dramas, including works like Viswasak Ghaath by Walter Derebail.
His talent soon caught attention, leading him to Bombay, where he worked on the Konkani film Sukhi Konn and honed his skills in Hindustani music notations and Raaga Alaap.
Jerome’s gentle, expressive voice and creative compositions earned him the title “Kalaa Ratna.” Among his many hits, Anja Sarken Chedum (also known as Sundor Chedum) stands out as his most popular song, released in 1968 as part of the album Tops And Pops In Konkani Music.
The song’s catchy rhythm and heartfelt lyrics made it a beloved classic. Other notable tracks include Maka Gounddailo, Taxiwala, and Shegunachi Sunn, which showcased his ability to blend emotion with melody.
Jerome’s work laid the foundation for modern Konkani music, inspiring future generations of artists. Despite passing away, his legacy endures through his timeless songs, which continue to be cherished by fans. His children, including Ritesh (DJ Nasha), carry forward his musical heritage. Jerome remains a celebrated icon in the Konkani community.
